The German Who Explains Germans (to Everyone Else)

Chris Doering is half German, half Jewish, and has lived on almost every continent: South Africa, the US, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Mexico. When he finally landed in Berlin, he found his calling in explaining Germany to the people who just arrived in it.

On stage he turns his own life into the material: a multinational family, fatherhood, the culture clash of a multiethnic relationship, and what Germans do and don’t mean when they say things. It’s dark in places, but never mean, and a good first look at German quirks for expats and travelers.

Chris is also the host of Laughing Spree, a friendly English comedy show on a boat in Berlin. Berlin comedians get five to seven minutes each, and the crowd is part of the fun. It runs every Tuesday and Thursday, and yes, that includes tonight.

And he’s not just a performer: Chris is the CEO of Propaganda Comedy, the Berlin-based company behind it all. Propaganda Comedy has produced over a thousand English-language shows across Europe, with regular nights in cities like Hamburg, Munich, Prague, Copenhagen, Oslo, Zurich and Basel. So whether you’ve just moved to Germany or are passing through, there’s probably an English comedy night near you.

  • It also runs themed shows, weekly open mics and showcases of Europe’s best working comics, with expat-focused series like “Expats in Berlin” and “New in Town”. I also found an “Expats in Leipzig” showcase and a stop in Istanbul.
